New Jersey E-Bike Law

New safety regulations for electric bicycles are now law in New Jersey. This law was passed in an attempt to reduce crashes involving electric bicycles, address unsafe high-speed and modified e-bikes, protect riders, pedestrians and drivers and to improve roadway safety.

For the first time, most e-bike operators must meet the following requirements:

-Riders age 17 and older must have a driver’s license

-Riders ages 15–16 must have a motorized bicycle license

-All e-bikes must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC)

-Liability insurance coverage is now mandatory for e-bike operation

*Please note: License and registration fees are waived for the first year. Enforcement and fines for non-compliance will begin in six months. This will be a time for law enforcement to focus on education and compliance. *

-Children under the age of 15 are not permitted to operate e-bikes

-These rules cover all classes of e-bikes, including pedal-assist, throttle-powered, and high-powered models

-Online sales of e-bikes are prohibited statewide for one year

-Speed-enhancing modification kits are now illegal
